The Royal Victorian Eye & Ear Hospital redevelopment involved the partial demolition of an existing building and the construction of five fully integrated and future-proofed floors, connecting the site’s two main towers.
Due to their industrial nature, the new plant rooms on these new floors need extra tough floors beyond what is required in other parts of a hospital. But they also must be easy to clean – to very high standards. Providing an extra challenge, the hospital continued to operate during the staged construction.
Hospital chooses tough and hygienic Nitoflor SLX

On the edge of Melbourne's CBD, 'the Eye and Ear' has been serving the Victorian community for over 150 years. To update the ageing infrastructure, a five-year redevelopment included five new floors connecting the site's existing towers.
This construction project came with an extra challenge: working in and around an operating hospital.
Why Nitoflor SLX?
A self-smoothing epoxy floor topping, Nitoflor SLX produces an impenetrable finish that is hygienic and easy to clean. For this reason, it is commonly used in hospitals and medical laboratories, as well as food processing plants, film studios, prisons and supermarkets.
Construction manager Hansen Yuncken specified Nitoflor SLX to combine industrial toughness with efficient cleaning while minimising disruption to the operating hospital.
Fosroc ANZ's industrial flooring specialist Greg Smith says the product's efficient application and fast curing time was ideal. "Floors can be walked on within 24 hours. As the system is solvent free with low VOC content, the hospital did not have to worry about nasty odours circulating through the ventilation system," Greg explains.
Fosroc ANZ recommends specialist contractors apply Nitoflor SLX, which is supplied as a pre-measured, multi-component system ready for on-site mixing. In this case, project flooring contractor Floor 91 appointed Alliance Flooring for the plant rooms. "We received excellent feedback about the application process and finish", Greg says.
