The Project
Water damaged concrete can blow budgets and push out deadlines but with Fosroc Cemtop HD30, project managers can quickly get their projects back on track.
When rainwater damaged the newly poured concrete floor of a National Storage facility in Brunswick in inner Melbourne, the project managers turned to Fosroc.
"This was a situation where we needed to find a viable solution quickly," Fosroc's Victorian-based Specification Manager Dino Currao explains.
A proven performer in hard-wearing conditions
The water damage had resulted in egg-shell cracking across the entire concrete surface, compromising its integrity.
"The time and cost involved in ripping up and replacing the concrete was prohibitive for the client, so we needed to find a solution that would deliver a durable, long-lasting, hard-wearing surface that still looked great," says Dino.
Drawing on the full breadth of Fosroc expertise, including technical support from Martin Venn, the team identified Cemtop HD30 as the ideal solution.
"We were confident that Cemtop HD30 was up to the job," Dino says. "DuluxGroup used it for one of its own warehouses more than 15 years ago and it is still in great condition, despite constant heavy vehicle traffic."
The floor topping was also successfully used to provide a non-slip surface in the car park of the Dandenong Hospital, providing further evidence of the product's strong performance.
Long-lasting with a choice of finish
A cementitious, waterproof floor topping, Cemtop HD30 can be used internally or externally and is capable of withstanding heavy traffic. Resistant to abrasion and many industrial chemicals, it is often used for the repair of rain-damaged concrete in warehouses and commercial carparks.
"It's a popular product for a number of reasons. It's easy to apply and maintain, it can be applied to a many different substrates and it offers a range of textured finishes," Dino says.
Expert application
Prior to the application of Cemtop HD30, expert applicators, Murex Group carefully prepared the concrete surface.
- Step 1: Cracks were cleaned up using a grinder and the surface thoroughly brushed clear of any debris.
- Step 2: The surface was primed using Nitoprime 330 to seal the substrate and prevent pinholes, promote adhesion and help prevent desiccation of the floor topping.
- Step 3: Cracks were filled with Cemtop HD30.
- Step 4: Cemtop HD30 was applied to the entire area at a minimum depth of 2mm using notch trowels. Applicators completed small areas at a time, carefully applying only enough product that could comfortably be completed within 15 minutes.
- Step 5: The surface was finished off with sponge trowels to give a smooth fresco finish.
Demonstrating the team's collaborative approach, Fosroc's experts worked closely with the National Storage Project Manager and applicators to ensure the correct preparation and application methods. "We provided advice and guidance throughout the entire process," Dino says.
"The client was incredibly pleased with the end result, but they were even more appreciative of the support we had provided and the speed at which we were able to identify and deliver a proven solution."
