The Project
After years exposed to sun, wind and rain, the busy outdoor carpark of a medical facility in Joondalup, Western Australia required substantial repair.
The thick flexible coating that had been applied to the surface of the car park years earlier had not handled vehicular traffic well. The coating had cracked significantly and lifted from the substrate.
Working closely with contractor PM Industries, Fosroc ANZ Account Manager, Ron Ierino, recommended a solution that involved:
1. Removing all old coatings and thoroughly cleaning surfaces
2. Priming the surface with Nitomortar 903 and lightly sand seeding to aid the bonding process
3. Applying a thick body coat of Nitoflor FC150 HP in Koala Grey and fully blinding with sand when wet to create a non-slip surface
4. Applying a final thick coat of Nitoflor PA Pipeline grey
5. Applying yellow kerbing and white lines using Dulux Roadmaster
Reducing down time for minimal disruption
Minimising disruption to the medical centre was a key consideration for project managers. Patients and the occasional ambulance required ongoing access to the car park throughout the works.
The quick hardening of the Nitomortar 903 primer helped to minimise the time the car park was out of action.
"A car or two tested the strength of our coatings before they had properly dried," Ron says. "Thankfully, due to the rapid initial hardening of the Nitomortar 903, it was not a problem."
UV resistance ensures durability and longevity
An outdoor car park, fully exposed to the sun, the surface needed strong UV resistance.
"Critical to this tailored solution was the use of Nitoflor PA as the UV protective top layer," Greg explains. "Without it, we could not have offered a suitable surfacing system for this type of project; the UV protection was key."
A two-part solvent-free polyaspartic coating, Nitoflor PA can be used as a topcoat for resin floor systems or as a standalone coating over correctly prepared concrete surfaces.
Available in eight colours, including clear, Nitoflor PA is abrasion resistant and chemical resistant, making it suitable for use in a range of settings including:
- hospitals;
- schools; and
- commercial kitchens
With a convenient 1:1 mix ratio and fast cure properties, Nitoflor PA allows for hassle-free application.
Non-slip surface a key requirement
To ensure the safety and wellbeing of visitors to the medical centre, it was critical that the surface of the car park was non-slip. This was achieved by generously seeding the Nitoflor FC150HP with anti-slip grains.
With an attractive satin finish, Nitoflor FC150 HP is a heavy-duty coating that can stand up to frequent vehicular traffic.
